"Good Relations" is a non-profit organization dedicated to fostering positive connections between people. In 2017, its Shidong Market Renovation Project in Taipei successfully promoted the beauty of daily life through design. In 2018, Good Relations invited 40 designers from home and abroad to launch the Dandelion Book Nook Project. With their own efforts, they installed 40 book nooks in different parks and green spaces across Taiwan. It is hoped that through these book nooks, books and the power derived from them can be shared and exchanged, allowing good relations to continue and circulate. 9STUDIO was honored to be one of the 40 participating designers. We chose the green space adjacent to the historic Jiuzhou'an Building in Taipei as the location for our book nook.
The renowned writer Ms. Chen Wenxi has written a note for this book nook: It is often in books that we can find ourselves and see everything about us—including our vulnerability, avoidance, hypocrisy, and strength. A book is not merely a physical object bound by pages of text; it is transparent, like a mirror that reflects us and the world we inhabit.
For a book nook situated on the lawn adjacent to Jiuzhou'an, its most fitting form is "invisible." With such a beautiful historic building nearby, why should the book nook need a distinct shape? If it must have a form, its purpose lies in reflecting the beauty of Jiuzhou'an and harmonizing with the surroundings. We designed a minimalist cube: two sides are made of mirrored stainless steel, allowing it to blend seamlessly into the environment in an optimal manner. The other two sides feature embedded glass boxes with diverse functions—display cases, tabletops, lighting compartments, book storage, and even a glass niche for chairs. Our goal is to maximize the functional extension of the book nook while minimizing its footprint. Under the tabletop, we integrated QR codes linked to different music genres; users can scan them to listen to their desired music as they read, tailored to their mood. Life, should be this beautiful.
